Czech Environmental Inspectorate
The Czech Environmental Inspectorate (CEI) is a professional body responsible for supervising compliance with environmental legislation. It also oversees compliance with binding decisions of administrative authorities in the field of the environment. The Czech Environmental Inspectorate was established in 1991 by Act No. 282/1991 Coll. on the Czech Environmental Inspectorate and its competence in forest protection.
The Czech Environmental Inspectorate carries out its activities in the following areas: nature protection, air protection, waste management, support for inspection activities and chemical safety, forest protection, water protection.
OVERVIEW OF CEI’S ACTIVITIES
- oversees compliance with environmental protection legislation,
- performs inspections - checks,
- imposes measures to correct identified deficiencies,
- imposes sanctions for non-compliance with environmental laws,
- controls the trade and handling of endangered species of animals, plants and products from them (confiscates illegally acquired species and objects),
- supervises the issue of chemical safety (dangerous chemical substances and mixtures) and product safety,
- restricts or stops operations if they seriously threaten the environment,
- participates in solving old ecological burdens,
- solves the initiatives of citizens and legal entities,
- provides information based on requests in the sense of applicable laws,
- informs the public as well as the media and state administration bodies about environmental data obtained during inspection activities,
- prepares opinions for other state administration bodies,
- participates in solving environmental accidents,
- cooperates with the inspection authorities of the countries of the European Union and the network of inspection authorities of the EU (so-called IMPEL).
