In connection with the legislation of the European Union valid in the Czech Republic since May 1, 2004, the rules for the import and export of CITES specimens have changed.
Import from countries outside the EU
To import specimens from Annexes A and B (according to EU legislation), a CITES export permit from the country of origin and an import permit to the Czech Republic are required, which are submitted to the customs office upon entry into the EU.
When importing specimens from Annexes C and D, it is necessary to fill in the import notification form at the customs office when entering the EU (the forms are available at the customs office), when importing a specimen from Appendix C from a country that has included it in the CITES list (see What is CITES section), an export permit from the country of origin is also required.
For artificially grown plants, an export permit from the country of origin may replace the phytosanitary certificate.
In some cases, the import of inanimate specimens from Annex B (products, souvenirs, hunting trophies, etc.) can be considered as an import of a personal or family nature, in which case only an export permit from the country of origin is sufficient (you can get more information from the MoE - see the Contacts section). For some selected inanimate specimens from Annex B, no export or import permit is required for importation, but such importation must meet the conditions set out in Article 57 of Commission Regulation (EC) No. 865/2006 - see free trade with CITES specimens.
Import bans into the EU
Some CITES species are prohibited from being imported into the EU - in the link: SUSPENSION OF IMPORTS. The import of such specimens into the EU is not permitted, even if the country of origin permits their export.
Export to countries outside the EU
An export permit from the Czech Republic is required to export specimens from Annexes A, B and C.
A CITES permit is not required to export Appendix D specimens.
When exporting artificially grown plants, a phytosanitary certificate replaces the CITES export permit.
If you are planning to import live animals or plants or products from them, check with the Ministry of the Environment before your departure whether they are not subject to the CITES Convention and what the conditions are for their legal import - or see this leaflet as well.
